Stamford Bridge is the most central Premier League ground in London. You can be on Fulham Road two hours after landing at Heathrow, have a pint where the club was founded, and be in your seat before kick-off. This is how to do the trip properly.
The club and the ground
Chelsea have played at Stamford Bridge since 1905. The stadium sits on Fulham Road in SW6 — technically Fulham, not the King’s Road stretch most people picture as “Chelsea.” Capacity is about 40,000–41,600. Home ends are the Matthew Harding Stand (north) and the Shed End (south). Away fans are usually in part of the Shed.
It is compact, loud when it is full, and hemmed in by houses, shops and pubs. That is the charm and the hassle: easy Tube access, almost no parking, and a tight security perimeter on matchdays.
Address: Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London SW6 1HS.
If you cannot get a match ticket, the stadium tour and museum are still worth the trip. The tour walks the dressing rooms, press room, tunnel and pitchside; the museum holds the men’s and women’s trophies, including the Champions League and Club World Cup silverware. Tours run most non-match days (closed Christmas Eve–Boxing Day and many home matchdays). Book on chelseafc.com. Adult stadium tour tickets are typically in the high-£20s to low-£30s range; museum-only is cheaper. Allow two hours on site.
Tickets: the hard part
Premier League home tickets are membership-first. Typical flow:
- Become a member on the official site (True Blue / CFC Blues / Junior Blues tiers).
- Tickets usually go on sale to members around six weeks before a fixture (often quoted as 42 days).
- Leftovers, if any, hit general sale. General sale is priced about £5 above member rates.
2026/27 member prices (official bands) — Category AA adult examples: East Upper £78, West Lower £78, Matthew Harding / Shed upper £71, restricted-view Matthew Harding Lower from £27. Category C is flatter, around £52 across many areas. Concessions (U20 / 66+) are roughly half in several stands. Season tickets run from about £700 to £1,095 for adults depending on stand.
Big games (Tottenham, Manchester United, European nights) sell out fast. Avoid street touts. If official inventory is gone, use a platform with buyer protection — unofficial resale is how people get burned.
Hospitality (Club Chelsea / Westview / suites) is the realistic route if you are flying in late and need a guaranteed seat. Packages start in the low hundreds and climb into four figures for derby nights.
Home fans: digital tickets in the official Chelsea app.
Away fans: allocation comes through your own club; enter via Stamford Gate toward the Shed. Local pubs next to the ground do not admit visiting colours.
Getting there
Do not drive. Resident parking, matchday closures on Fulham Road (Harwood Road to Hortensia Road, from about 90 minutes before kick-off until after full time), and almost no stadium parking make it a bad idea.
Tube and rail (best option)
| From | Route | Walk from station |
|---|---|---|
| Fulham Broadway (District line, Wimbledon branch) | Change at Earl’s Court if you are not already on a Wimbledon train | 3–7 minutes |
| West Brompton (District + Overground) | Pleasant walk, sometimes via Brompton Cemetery | ~15 minutes |
| Imperial Wharf (Overground) | Direct from Clapham Junction | ~15–20 minutes |
Victoria → Fulham Broadway is about 18 minutes on the District line. Paddington is a similar District-line ride. Contactless / Oyster is fine; Zone 2. After the whistle, Fulham Broadway packs out — walking to Earl’s Court for a quieter platform is a common local move.
Buses 14, 211 and 414 stop on Fulham Road outside the ground.
From the airports
- Heathrow: Piccadilly line to Earl’s Court, then District one stop to Fulham Broadway. Roughly 50–70 minutes. Closest major airport.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Southern to Victoria, then District to Fulham Broadway. Allow 70–90 minutes.
- City: DLR into town, then District line. About an hour.
- Luton / Stansted: 90 minutes-plus via Thameslink or Stansted Express plus Tube.
Rideshare drop-off works until the road closure; you will be set down a few streets away.
Matchday rules that catch visitors
- Gates: usually two hours before weekend kick-off, 90 minutes before evening games. Be inside 30 minutes before kick-off. No re-admittance once your ticket is scanned.
- Cashless everywhere inside — card or phone wallet. ATMs at Fulham Broadway and near Stamford Gate if you need cash for the street.
- Bags: max A4 / 30 × 20 × 10 cm. No lockers at the stadium. Fulham Broadway shopping centre sometimes runs a paid bag drop. Megastore purchases go in clear bags.
- Banned: umbrellas, selfie sticks, bottles over 500 ml, cans, glass, flares, flag poles, large-lens cameras, vapes/smoking inside. Under-16s need an 18+ accompanying adult.
- Early-bird food and drink deals often run in the first half-hour after gates open. Away fans are steered toward stadium concessions because nearby pubs are home-only.
Home tickets live in the app. Charge your phone. Screenshots sometimes fail at the reader.
Where to drink and eat
Pubs immediately around the Bridge check tickets or colours on matchdays. They are Chelsea territory. Arrive 2–3 hours early or you will queue in the street.
Home-fan pubs (walkable)
- The Butcher’s Hook, 477 Fulham Road — five minutes from the ground. The club was founded here in 1905 when it was the Rising Sun. Sacred ground; packed.
- The Tommy Tucker, Waterford Road — five minutes, proper local.
- Chelsea Gate (formerly Chelsea Pensioner), Fulham Road — a couple of minutes from the turnstiles, small garden.
- Cock Tavern, North End Road — about 10 minutes. Regulars’ pub; get there early.
- The Goose, North End Road — further (15–20 minutes), bigger, still busy.
On site: Frankie’s Sports Bar & Grill is attached to the stadium hotel complex — convenient, tourist-heavy, cashless like the rest of the site.
Away fans: skip the Fulham Road strip. Use Earl’s Court — The Courtfield (opposite the Tube), The Blackbird, Earl’s Court Tavern — then District line one or two stops, or a 25-minute walk. The official club line is that pubs around the stadium do not welcome visiting supporters.
Food on the concourse is standard stadium fare (pies, dogs, chicken). Fulham Broadway has chains if you want something before you go through security. King’s Road is a 15–20 minute walk for a sit-down meal that is not a pre-match crush.
Where to stay
Book early on home weekends; prices jump.
| Base | Why | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| On the ground | Zero commute, noisy on match night | Stamford Bridge Hotel London (the old Copthorne / Millennium on site) |
| Fulham Broadway | Walk to the ground, shops, Tube | Travelodge Fulham, Premier Inn Fulham |
| Earl’s Court / West Brompton | District line, mid-range cluster, away-fan pubs | ibis Earls Court, Mercure Earls Court, hub by Premier Inn West Brompton |
| Chelsea Harbour | Quieter, riverside, 15–20 min walk | Chelsea Harbour Hotel & Spa |
| South Ken / Victoria | Museums and central London first, 15–25 min Tube | Any District-line hotel |
If the match is only one night of a London trip, staying in Zone 1 and riding the District line is often better value than paying the matchday hotel premium.
A simple 48-hour plan
Day before (or morning of a 3pm kick-off)
Stadium tour + museum behind the Matthew Harding Stand. Megastore. Walk King’s Road or down to the river at Chelsea Harbour / Imperial Wharf.
Matchday
Late breakfast. Pub from 11–12 for a 3pm start (or mid-afternoon for an 8pm game). Leave bags at the hotel. Tube to Fulham Broadway. Security queue, early-bird pint inside, seats 20–30 minutes before kick-off. After full time, either wait out the crush or walk to Earl’s Court / West Brompton.
Extra day in west London
Natural History Museum, V&A and Science Museum are a short District/Piccadilly hop to South Kensington. Saatchi Gallery and the Physic Garden if you want Chelsea-proper. Fulham’s Craven Cottage is a riverside walk if you want a second ground.
Nearby fixtures worth knowing (as of early September 2026)
Home dates in the diary around now include a midweek Carabao Cup tie with Leeds (9 September) and Premier League v Hull City (12 September). Always re-check kick-off times — TV selections move Saturday 3pm games. Official listings: chelseafc.com.
Quick checklist
- Official ticket or hospitality confirmation in the app
- Contactless card / phone wallet (no cash inside)
- Small bag only, or none
- Oyster or contactless bank card for Tube
- Arrive 90–120 minutes early
- Home colours only in Fulham Road pubs; away colours stay in Earl’s Court
- Charged phone
- Weather layer — uncovered seats exist, umbrellas do not go in
Stamford Bridge is not the biggest stadium in England. It is the one you can fold into a normal London weekend without a two-hour coach ride. Get the ticket sorted first, use the District line, and give yourself time on Fulham Road. That is the whole trip.
